Best Take-Out: Amato's
Amato's is a great story. The company has more than a dozen locations around Maine, selling the best $2 and change Italian sandwiches around. The company began early in the 1900s when Giovanni Amato started selling bread to workers on Portland's waterfront.

Now Amato's is a must-stop for Mainers who want a quick, tasty lunch on the way to the beach, or to a picnic, or well, anytime.

Best "Maine" Italian Sandwich: Amato's
Amato's invented the now-famous Maine Italian sandwich, an inauspicious-sounding combo of ham, American cheese, and fresh veggies on a soft roll. Sounds simple, but transplanted Mainers who come home for visits often stock up on the portable lunches before heading back. I recently talked to a Maine native in Atlanta who said she never visits home without getting a couple Maine Italians for the long trip home. Gives new meaning to the term "to go."
